WW1 Western Front

On August 23rd 2010 Mal Taylor and Andy Hamilton set out the WW1 terrain boards with their figures on so that Mal Johnston could take photos of them for the new Grimsby Wargames Society Official Website at http://grimsbywargamessociety.webs.com. Andy and Mal were good enough to let me take photos of the terrain again which I had not done so for ages.

Below are some of my favourite photos that I took of the terrain. Clicking on any of the photos will enlarge it and take you to the rest of the collection on Flickr.

All German figures and vehicles were owned and painted by Malcolm Taylor. All British figures and vehicles were owned by Andy Hamilton. The terrain was made by both Andy Hamilton and Malcolm Taylor.

Wars of the Roses Fest

Last Monday we had 2 Wars of the Roses games going on. A Huge battle on the large table downstairs plus a smaller one on one of the tables upstairs.

John Ogden (on the right, with camera) as the Scots playing Mark Alcock as the Yorkists. At the time it seemed that there was no clear winner. The figures were great to look at though….

Myself I participated in the HUGE game downstairs on the Yorkists side which meant I was on Dave Tuck’s side. Specifically my soldiers were on the left flank which was doing surprisingly well due to the unusual amount of sixes that were being thrown by me, leaving my counterpart Mike Barnatt understandably frustrated.

Both sides put up a great fight. On the Lancastrian’s side were Mal Johnston and one of his sons and Mike Barnatt. On the Yorkists side were myself, Dave Tuck and his godson James. Unfortunately due to the collapse on our right flank we were unable to achieve victory on this occasion. The first wargame I had played at the club in months and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Here are a few other pics from the game:

New Grimsby Wargames Society Website

In my absence over the past few months the Grimsby Wargames Society has created a new website for itself. It can be found at: http://grimsbywargamessociety.webs.com/

The link on this blog (to the right) has been updated. There is also a new forum to accompany it at: http://grimsbywarriors.proboards.com/index.cgi. However to view it you will first have to register and login.

In support of the new website on 5th August 2010 I pointed my domain http://www.gywargames.co.uk to the new site. Over the past few years it has become well known on the net all over the world by me with this domain and many sites will still have the Grimsby Wargames Society listed on their sites with this domain.

Recently I have observed comments on other blogs regarding the Grimsby Wargames Society website till the new one had been created and this is my response and explanation:

A few months ago my PC caught a rather nasty virus off Facebook and so ended up formatting. It was around this time that my PC began shutting down by itself and even when rebooted didnt stay on for long. It had be turned on and off at the mains to use it again before it then shut off by itself. When formatting did not solve it, the next suspect was my hard drive, which was then checked for errors etc and found none.

Not long ago it occurred to me that there was a problem with my PC fans due to overheating which was finally confirmed when I installed a program called Speedfan to monitor the fans temperatures. As a result last weekend I took the only option available to me at the time: Moving Memory, Hard Drive and DVD drive to my other PC, which acted as the server for the Grimsby Wargames Society website for over a year. Unfortunately it meant the Hard Drive had to be formatted and Windows reinstalled yet again.

Luckily my Hard Drive has always been partitioned so all photos taken in the past year including wargames photos are backed up in the other drive.

Financially my situation has got worse as these days as I am left with £30 out my dole each fortnight for food for myself and my cat and anything else so have struggled to have even a few quid spare to come down to the club and play games regularly which is why I havent been down each week. In addition I was concerned that if I dropped in, based on the past behaviour of some members, club members would moan that I had not updated my own web site – The Grimsby Wargames Society website – so did not drop in. The Grimsby Wargames Society website itself plus its content, with the exception of contributors who own their own work, has always been owned by me and therefore as far as i’m concerned, nobody has or ever has had any right to complain about the site being updated or not nor do they have any right to tell me what to do with it. Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.

The new PC has only the CPU fan to keep it cool so I have bought myself around a year at least I think before this one will need sorting out. It might be possible to start coming back to the club every monday night to play games again plus joining in on playing Magic, as long as it involves just paying subs, but until I have reviewed my finances again cannot say for certain.

SO……

You’ll be seeing me again soon peeps. Good Luck to the Grimsby Wargames Society with its new site! This blog will also be coming back to life too…..

I would like to thank all those who have been good enough to make an effort to contribute to my website – the Grimsby Wargames Society website – over the past 8 years I have been doing it. Your efforts have been appreciated.

Pauper Challenge at Grimsby Magic Club

One of the things we have noticed of late is that sometimes it is very hard to get into Magic and whilst people do come down to the club it can be difficult for them to compete with their homebrew collection of cards. I know I hand out some common decks but even then they are still under powered to what a lot of us run but if some players could eeek out a game win or two, maybe the odd match win it could be the start of better things.

We also have several people who would play Magic except for the potential expense of the hobby. There are a lot of staple cards that are common and uncommon these days which should help build a deck for not too much money.

So I have had an idea, lets have a deck building competiton on here. Using only common cards that will be legal when rotation hits in October, build a deck that could be a contender. Hopefully, this will inspire a few of the more financially challenged members too and wouldn't cost too much to upgrade over time or from prizes with trades.

I'll start everyone off with "Red Deck Wins"

4 Goblin Bushwahcker
4 Plated Geopede
4 Kiln Fiend
4 Battle Ratltle Shaman

3 Goblin Tunneller

3 Vulshock Beserker

4 Searing Blaze
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Burst Lightning
4 Stagger shock

14 Mountain
4 Teetering Peeks
4 terramorphic expanse
2 Evolving Wilds

I'll give out some Promo Foils to the best entries and maybe even throw in a Booster for Overall Winner.

Hello there! Remember me? And one of the best Cliffhangers ever....

Hi all,

How are you doing? I know its been a while since I posted anything on here. Sorry about that. Hope to be getting back to normal shortly. Will give you more information soon but its safe to say that my absence from the Grimsby Wargames Society will last a little longer than it has been unfortunately and till I get my PC sorted out properly, virus free and in no danger of shutting down when it wants to - very frequently - restored all my programs and brought my blogs up to date anyway. Cant afford to buy a new PC or motherboard.

However in the interim I have managed to join an Athletics Club, which runs on Friday nights and now run 3 times a week and been in 2 Fun Runs in the past few months. Had to say something positive.

It is well known fact that I am a Doctor Who fan so below is what I think has to be the best - or one of the best Doctor Who Cliffhangers ever - at the end of "The End of Time Part 1" with the Master effectively cloning himself.....
