Latest Website Update

Yesterday I uploaded to the website a PHP script on all the main pages that basically shows the exact time, date, to the second when it was last updated or modified. On all pages except for 2 the update was in fact putting in the update script. With this script it doesnt matter how many times you refresh the page, the date and time will stay the same.

The 2 pages are the frontpage and the links page. Other than the update script there has been a correction to the date referring to the Pirate game, "Website Updates" has been added to the menu while some things on the Menu have also been removed. The "Website Updates" link brings you to all posts on this blog tagged Website Updates. The front page photo paragraph has moved up replacing the other paragraph that had been there. The paragraph at the top has also been totally rewritten right down to the link to the new map. I'm not entirely satisfied with that text but its not bad for a first draft.

Other than the update script the only change to this page was yet another 2010 correction that has now been changed to 2009, referring to the link to Steve Walker's blog.

The Grimsby Wargames Society Website v3.0 is coming soon, with more room for more content, looking much nicer and smarter than this one. Aim to bring you a screenshot of the frontpage soon.

The website can be found at http://www.gywargames.co.uk/

On another note, I have been down the club for the past 2 weeks and taken photos as usual. The games from those nights will be appearing extremely soon on this blog. Extremely soon meaning before next monday.

PHP Installed, Website Back Online

Sorry Folks. The website was offline for longer than anticipated. It's been back up again at least 15-20 minutes. Its the first time though that I've had to install it in this way and make sure that the server was able to load and use PHP scripts. Meant reading a lot of instructions, testing the server and the PHP. Inputting everything in manually into the PHP and servers configuration files. Had to switch back to my computer too.

With the Grimsby Wargames Society website now PHP enabled again - yes, it has been before - I can now put PHP scripts into the site. For example I could put in a decent "Page last updated" script into each page and much more.

On another note, have any of you eagle eyed readers spotted that I have made a mistake on the front page of the website recently? Only realised it myself while sorting out the PHP. The mistake? The caption referring to the Pirate Game is dated 21 December 2010!! I will correct it later. It appears I can time travel too.

Temporarily Taking Website Offline

I am temporarily taking the website offline so that I can install PHP on the server. Hopefully it will not be for long.

Thanks

Website Update since 2010 AGM

Following the AGM On January 4th 2010, the website has been updated. It was updated on January 5th 2010 with a new photo. The banner at the top of the page was also removed. In addition the link as to "where to find us on grimsby" was changed to a better multimap link.

As you can clearly see it was updated on the 5th January 2010. The type of updates requested were like an update to the gallery or even if it means just changing the front page of the website every month.

The gallery was also removed from the menu so that no one could use it. I decided to remove it for the time being till the galleries could be revamped with more newer content after a comment made at the AGM, which I view as a fair comment, that the galleries on the gallery page were old.

The picasa galleries that were linked to from that page are still accessible so if anyone has any of those galleries on their favourites they can still be viewed.

The previous update was in November 2009, specifically 25th November 2009 as also clearly stated in this blog post: http://grantsgrimsbygames.blogspot.com/2009/11/changed-front-page-at-main-website.html

Main page index.html updated on 25th November 2009.

This is the October 2009 front page update. The photo on it is from one of Paul Robinson's blog posts.

Any changes to the website and all updates will be documented on this blog as I have done in the past. To view past updates etc on this blog click on the link on right or here: http://grantsgrimsbygames.blogspot.com/search/label/Website%20Updates

Each time I have made an update or change to the website in the past I have taken screenshots of them. Screenshots will also be made of changes and updates from this point on. Updates will also be posted on my twitter feed.

Since the AGM I have made changes to our facebook group that I set up a few years ago to promote the club and its members.

At this moment in time the Grimsby Wargames Society Facebook group has 33 members and is open to members and anyone interested in the club. It can be found at: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=24921897419

On the subject of Grimsby Wargames Society members contributing to the website, all I can say is: The website is about the Grimsby Wargames Society and its members. While I am happy to try to get contributions off members, it is only fair that club members must themselves make an effort to contribute also. If you want your pictures on the website, give them to me! If there's only a few you can email them to me at gywar@yahoo.co.uk. If there's a large amount you can burn them to CD or DVD to give to me, or put them on a flash drive or I could let you borrow my flash drive though it is only 1GB. It may also be helpful for all members to provide me with their up to date email addresses which could be useful in notifying members of updates.

Should any member or the club itself wish to advertise for an event or even just a big game in which other gamers and members of the public are able to join in then let me know in plenty of time. It will be advertised on the website as well as this blog. As always I am happy to listen to suggestions, comments and fair and constructive criticism regarding the website.

Finally, I wish to bring this to all the attention of all the Grimsby Wargames Society members. I've been doing the website now FOR 8 YEARS!!! I dont think any of the members have noticed or care. The initial idea for even doing a website for the club was mine to begin with. A proposal was actually typed up by me before being presented to the club. The website in its form then (nothing like it is now) was then ready for just after Christmas 2001 coming online in January 2002. A month later Mark Piper of the 20th Century Wargaming website at http://www.worldoptions.com.au/fourpipers/rapid/ was good enough to link to it. Mark Piper has since had one of his scenarios published in the Rapid Fire! 2nd edition rulebook.

With Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, the yahoo group, this blog and the website, all I have set out to do in those 8 YEARS is do my best - on a voluntary basis - to promote the club, its members and all the other groups who use it and help to keep it running. At the same time I have always hoped the club appreciated those efforts and did not take them for granted.

Pre-Christmas 2009 Wargames Me Hearties!

Here's a quick rundown of all the Pre-Christmas 2009 Wargames at the club on 21st December 2009 with lots of pics. First up the Napoleonics game between Mark Alcock and John Ogden - Photos above and below.

WW2 game using the Blitzkrieg Commander rules. Tim Mercer as the Americans with Dave Tuck as the Germans with Martin Buck assisting Dave for a short while. More photos below....

Finally a shot of Tim Mercer's WW2 Americans marching towards the Germans.

The Pirate Game with Andy Hamilton, Mal Taylor, Tony Walmsley and Mike Barnatt, each having 3 ships.

These were Mike Barnatt's ships.

Thats Mal Taylor on the left in deep concentration with Andy Hamilton on the right in festive mood wearing the Santa hat!

This photo and the one below are close ups of Mal Taylor's Pirate Ships. Shiver me timbers you old sea dogs! Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

Doctor Who: The End of Time Part 2

Not long finished watching Doctor Who: The End of Time Part 2 followed by Doctor Who Confidential on BBC3. For those who have not seen it yet, it was a great send off for the tenth Doctor and it can be watched again on the BBCi Player. It answered a few questions in the process too. Liked the last few minutes at the end before his regeneration also. David Tennant's Doctor will be missed.

I have seen the new Doctor Matt Smith on some other shows and I like the guy but am still interested in seeing how he will play the Doctor. They got him off to a good start.

In the new trailer for Season 5 I'm sure I spotted the weeping angels from the episode "Blink" popping up again....

Coming Spring 2010....

Happy New Year 2010

Happy New Year Everybody and wish you all the best for 2010!

Hopefully this year you will get your wargaming wishes fulfilled and play periods you may want to start playing and perhaps finish projects you started last year. Either way I hope it will be a fun year for you.

As you can see this is the new Doctor Who logo for the new Doctor Matt Smith when he takes over. Personally I thought David Tennant was a fantastic Doctor and one of my favourite Doctors and he will be missed by fans. Tom Baker was another of my favourite Doctors when I was a kid but there was a lot to like about all the others too.

Don't forget Part 2 of The End of Time at 6.40pm on BBC1 today. Someone or something is going to knock four times.........
